Enzo and Gilles
James Hunt recognized the passion and raw skill of Gilles Villeneuve while racing against him in the 1976 Formula Atlantic race in Trois-Rivières Québec and got him a test drive with McLaren Team Formula 1.
He showed great promise yet the team passed him up, allowing Enzo Ferrari, impressed by Villeneuve’s skill and spirit, choose to give him a test and quickly signed him up.
Gilles was officially Driver No.2 to teammate Jodi Scheckter, and being there for the team, accepted his position.
He drove his cars quite often past their limit, with unbridled passion, the idea of giving up never crossing his mind.
Some say that Villeneuve’s irreverence towards some of his Ferrari rides frustrated management, yet his speaking his mind stirred a deep respect from the team and Enzo himself … he would say what he thought.
Some romantics even project that Gilles was the son that Enzo hoped he still had …
It's clear that they had a connection and bond that rarely happened at Scuderia Ferrari …
